21: Inquiries into Art, History, and the Visual – Beiträge zur Kunstgeschichte und visuellen Kultur exclusively publishes original contributions in German, English, French, Italian or Spanish (other languages are equally welcome). Translations of articles published or forthcoming elsewhere and second publications or pre-publications of book chapters cannot be considered. Moreover, the editorial board assumes that manuscripts are being offered for exclusive review and are not under consideration at any other journal concurrently.

Authors’ rights
Our authors retain copyright to their texts and full publishing rights without restriction; “Author Processing Charges” (APCs) are not levied. Individual contributions and complete issues are generally published under the license CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 unless this license has to be modified for specific issues or contributions due to restrictions imposed by institutions holding image rights.

Peer Review
Submitted contributions will be evaluated by the Editorial Board and checked for plagiarism with Turnitin before a double-blind peer review by two external experts. Suggestions for reviewers by the authors cannot be considered. The editorial board will decide on the publication based on the peer reviewers' recommendations. At the latest six months after submission, authors will be informed whether their contribution has been accepted for publication and which changes may need to be incorporated. The final version will be copyedited before typesetting.

Submissions
Submissions for articles should include (in one file):

1. The text and footnotes. Submissions should not exceed 60-70,000 characters (including spaces and footnotes).
2. Abstract: please include an abstract in English (ca. 800 characters including spaces in one paragraph)
3. Keywords: please provide at least three keywords summarizing the subject of your manuscript.
4. Author’s bio: short academic CV to be published with the article (for examples see previous issues of the journal).
5. Contact details: name, address, e-mail address (to be published with the article), institutional affiliation, and/or ORCID.
6. Image files and list of captions, including credits

Reviews should not exceed 15,000 characters (including spaces). Manuscripts are to be submitted as a .doc/.docx attachment via email to the editorial office: 21-inquiries@unibe.ch. For images files, please use a file hosting service such as WeTransfer etc. For the document to be considered, please make sure it corresponds to the style sheet guidelines [PDF] of 21: Inquiries into Art, History, and the Visual – Beiträge zur Kunstgeschichte und visuellen Kultur prior to submission.
